10 Week Business Basix Program Participants

In February, 5 BHC tenants participated in ‘The Business of Hope’ 10 Week Business Basix Program run by Deb Jones in collaboration with Wes Leake from TAFE Small Business Solutions and Common Ground Queensland. Participants who completed the course gained a Certificate III in Micro Business, received one-on-one mentoring for their personal business goals and heard from industry professionals.

The Green Square Art Project

The Green Square Art Project is a tenant led initiative that was started in September 2016. This group is led by BHC tenant Gerard Bargo, who has been a tenant with BHC for 5 years and throughout that time has been involved in numerous community programs, initiatives and volunteering. Mr Bargo is a proud indigenous tenant and artist and has wanted to see an art group at his complex for many years. Mr Bargo spoke with other tenants and found there were numerous artists in the building and sought to start a group where individuals could come and work on their art in a safe and friendly environment.

Dave's Story

Dave served in the Royal Australian Navy but was medically discharged after 10 years. A series of life hurdles brought on post-traumatic stress disorder and severe bi-polar depression, and in 2006, Dave spent 18 traumatic months living on park benches in Sydney.

It started me on a pretty steep spiral,” Dave said. “I felt like I lost control of my life. I was in a pretty dark spot with no one to fall back on.

After community mental health services intervened, Dave eventually returned to family in Brisbane, but his struggle to find a suitable home was far from over. While living in a crowded social housing community, Dave once again spiralled into depression and became a hermit.

But Dave’s luck finally changed when he found out about BHC and moved in to his new home at Bowen Court in 2015.
