Chermside Housing Pilot Project

Creating homes for single-parent families disproportionately affected by the housing and cost-of-living crisis.

Single-parent families are among the groups hardest hit by Queensland’s housing and cost-of-living crisis. Many are facing impossible choices between paying rent, putting food on the table and covering everyday expenses.

At BHC, we hear from parents every week who are searching for more than just a roof over their heads. They need a safe, secure home where their children can thrive, build connections and plan for the future with confidence.

The Chermside Housing Pilot Project is an innovative response to this challenge.

Located in Chermside, the project will deliver three affordable three-bedroom townhomes specifically designed for single-parent families. These homes will provide the stability families need today while creating pathways to stronger financial futures tomorrow. The project was made possible through Brisbane City Council’s generous donation of a 637m² residential site, creating a unique opportunity to deliver lasting social impact.

More than a home

A safe and affordable home changes everything.

When families have housing security, children are better able to engage at school, parents can focus on employment and financial stability, and households can build the foundations for a brighter future.

The Chermside Housing Pilot Project has been designed to do exactly that.

Located close to schools, public transport, healthcare and employment opportunities, these homes will provide families with more than affordability – they will provide connection, opportunity and a sense of belonging.

An innovative model for affordable housing

Designed by leading Brisbane architects Arkhefield, the development embraces the principles of “gentle density” – creating thoughtfully designed homes that integrate seamlessly into established neighbourhoods while increasing the supply of affordable housing.

The project is also a pilot for a new way of delivering housing.

By bringing together government, philanthropy, industry and community partners, the Chermside Housing Pilot Project demonstrates how targeted charitable investment can be directly translated into high-quality housing outcomes. It is a practical and scalable model that has the potential to inform future affordable housing initiatives across Brisbane and beyond.

By leveraging donated land and significant pro bono contributions from industry partners, the project demonstrates how charitable investment can be maximised to deliver greater social impact.

A message from BHC

“As a charity that provides affordable housing for those facing housing insecurity, we receive many calls from single-parent families who not only need a place to call home, but the space to truly thrive.

These well-located three-bedroom townhomes will create opportunities for families to achieve greater financial stability and build stronger futures. Starting as three homes, this project has the potential to demonstrate a new way of delivering the affordable housing our communities desperately need.”

Help us bring this vision to life

The land has been donated. The vision has been designed. A dedicated team of partners has committed their expertise and support.

Now we need the support of donors and community partners to help bring these homes to life.

Your contribution will directly support the delivery of safe, affordable housing for families experiencing housing insecurity, helping create lasting change for parents and children who need it most.

Your support will help:

Create safe and affordable homes for single-parent families

Provide stability for children during critical years of development

Improve access to education, employment and support services

Demonstrate an innovative housing model that can be replicated in other communities

Strengthen Brisbane’s response to the housing crisis

Every donation contributes to a practical, tangible solution – and every contribution helps build a more inclusive Brisbane.
