BHC’s newest development in Woolloogabba was recognised as one of the finalists in the Affordable Housing category at the 2021 UDIA Queensland Mitchell Brandtman Awards for Excellence.
Designed by award-winning Brisbane firm KO&Co Architecture, the property contains 32 new homes, including 27 for people on low incomes and key workers and five specifically allocated for young people at risk of homeless, supported by Brisbane Youth Service.
BHC’s Benson Place, Springwood wins the Leading Housing Development Project in the AHI Queensland’s Brighter Future Awards.
Completed in February 2019, Benson Place was developed in partnership with the Department of Housing and Public Works. This $10.5M development provides 35 one-bedroom homes, each including a multi-purpose room, built to Gold Australian Livable Housing Design Guidelines.
Benson Place was created for senior public housing residents living in Logan and looking to downsize into more suitable accommodation. Residents were living in large public housing properties that were too big for their current household requirements, with poor accessibility, and difficult maintenance requirements. Benson Place was designed to support residents’ aspirations to age in place in their local community, providing them with peace of mind about their long-term housing futures.
We are proud to announce that BHC’s Benson Place has received the state award in the affordable development category at the UDIA Queensland 2020 Mitchell Brandtman Awards for Excellence.
Funded in partnership with the Queensland Government, Benson Place in Brisbane’s south comprises 35 apartments for seniors looking to downsize from their older public housing residences. Designed by leading Brisbane firm Ultralinea Architecture, this striking apartment building is well located to key transport hubs, community facilities and pedestrian linkages for the convenience of those that call it home.
We are delighted to announce that BHC’s Jingeri has won the Affordable Development Award in the UDIA Wingate National Awards for Excellence. This is our first UDIA National win and we couldn’t be more proud of this building and the residents who call it home!
Built in partnership with the Queensland Government under the Elderly Parent Carer Innovation Initiative, Jingeri provides purpose-built accommodation for people living with a disability who were previously residing with elderly parents.
Jingeri challenges preconceptions about what accessible housing looks like and is a testament to the work of our construction consultants – KO & Co Architecture, Integral Construction, Saunders Havill and Lambert & Rehbein.
Our development in Enoggera, Jingeri, received a High Commendation in the Project Leadership and Innovation category at the 2019 PowerHousing Australia National Awards.

Joe was recognised for his significant contribution to BHC’s growth, notably BHC’s $28m funding deal under the Queensland Government ‘Partnering for Growth’ initiative, which will provide 682 affordable homes over the next 5 years.
BHC’s Jingeri has been awarded the prestigious UDIA QLD Mitchell Brandtman Awards for Excellence in the Affordable Housing category.
Jingeri is a development that seeks to address a gap in the housing market for people living with a disability. With its carefully detailed design, aesthetically contrasting use of materials and quality finishings, Jingeri challenges the idea of what accessible housing can look like.
This award is a testament to the collaboration between BHC and KO & Co Architecture and we thank all our partners who helped us deliver this striking development.
Our Manager – Strategic Projects and Communications, Amy Maynard awarded the Outstanding Achievement award at the 2018 PowerHousing Australia National Awards.
Amy plays a pivotal role in shaping and delivering BHC’s strategies for growth and innovation in affordable housing. Responsible for development of new service delivery models, business improvement initiatives, and communications & PR, Amy also sits on the board of BHC’s subsidiary Catalyst Affordable Housing.
Amy recently led the establishment of Elevate Residential, a social enterprise real estate agency operating within Catalyst Affordable Housing, where all profits support BHC’s mission to grow the supply of affordable housing.
Our Strategic Projects Manager, Calvin Garrett, has taken out the Rising Star award at the 2018 PowerHousing Australia National Awards. Calvin is passionate about influencing the sector to ensure new developments are well designed and provide safe, secure living that meets the diverse needs of all Australians. Calvin was BHC’s programme lead for all activities and funding opportunities relating to the NDIS. He was also responsible for assisting the wider Operations Team to develop more efficient business practices and manages BHC’s Marketing and Communications Team.
The giant 3-D art project, Social Buttons, that allows seniors to plan social outings with the click of button has won a coveted 2017 UDIA Queensland Mitchell Brandtman Award for Excellence.
Social Buttons was created for Caggara House, an award-winning apartment complex for over 55s, developed by BHC Creating Liveable Communities in partnership with the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works.
The innovative affordable housing development, Spectrum Apartments, that was built above the Northern Busway tunnel has won a coveted 2017 UDIA Queensland Mitchell Brandtman Award for Excellence.
The striking three-story Spectrum development, unveiled in July, is the product of a unique partnership between leading affordable housing provider BHC Creating Liveable Communities and respected not-for-profits Communify and MS Queensland.
Spectrum features 60 units which accommodate a range of tenants including: people with disabilities, low income earners and private and commercial renters.
Spectrum Apartments was a Finalist for the 2017 UDIA QLD Awards for Excellence President’s Award.
Australasian Housing Institute (AHI) – Tenant Led Initiative Award celebrates an individual or a group of residents/tenants who have undertaken a project or initiative to benefit others in their community.
This year’s award was won by The Green Square Art Project, led by long term tenant Gerard Bargo. On the night we were proud to have Gerard in attendance to accept the award and speak about his art group, which stands as a safe and inclusive space to promote creativity, community and social inclusion.
Australasian Housing Institute (AHI) – Leading Community Engagement Practice Award celebrates a project or initiative that demonstrates leading practice in encouraging, enabling and supporting tenant and/or community engagement.
This year, BHC accepted the Leading Community Engagement Practice Award for the Caggara House Social Buttons project which saw tenants and creative designers at Inkahoots work together to develop the interactive instalment which utilises technology to promote and organise social interactions; building community.
The innovative partnership between Blue Care (Uniting Care Queensland) and BHC saw the substantial renovation of an existing, uninhabitable building into affordable, modern apartments for low income earners over the age of 55.
The Bowen Terrace development provides much-needed accommodation for low income seniors who have been part of the community for many years, but may have recently been squeezed out of the tight inner-city rental market.

Australasian Housing Institute (AHI) – Outstanding Achievement Award celebrates a housing professional who has made a strong impact on social housing, and who’s work has demonstrated the enormous difference one person can make to the housing profession.
We are exceptionally proud of our team member Andrew Black for receiving the 2015 AHI Queensland Outstanding Achievement Award for his contribution to BHC. Andrew has been an integral member of the BHC team, and his industrious and diligent work as Development Financial Analyst is behind each and every home and tenant outcome BHC has achieved in its 13 years.
BHC’s Bowen Court at New Farm took out the Illuminating Engineering Society – Award of Excellence for Lighting Design in 2015 for the buildings innovative and effective inclusion of lighting features targeted to assist mobility and reduce costs for seniors.

PowerHousing Australia’s Excellence in Tenant Engagement and Social Inclusion Award recognises outstanding programs contributing to tenant enrichment, encompassing social inclusion within the local community and resulting in community development.
The Bonney Lane Tenant Engagement Program commenced as an initiative of the Under One Roof consortium to explore methods of sustaining tenancies and creating opportunities for positive tenant outcomes. The project was jointly funded by Under 1 Roof and BHC.

BHC has recognised the value of on-site caretakers at a number of their larger complexes. In acknowledging that no specific training was available to accommodate the unique needs of caretakers who combine the responsibility for managing a significant asset along with being a point of contact and assistance to tenants, BHC embarked on working with a registered training provider to establish a custom designed training program.
Staff from registered training organisation, Sarina Russo, worked with BHC staff to tailor a program that would meet the diverse needs of our caretakers. A Diploma of Management program was established that met the needs of both Diploma curriculum requirements as well as the job training requirements of the team.
BHC’s Workforce Program at Bonney Lane, Fortitude Valley enabled tenants to establish themselves in studio apartments whilst they prepared to undertake study and/or seek employment.
Tenants were able to utilise a period of 12 months to stabilise their circumstances and establish a path to employment, so to achieve income and housing stability. Eleven of the sixteen participants had sustained their tenancies at Bonney Lane at the end of the project: eight as a result of gaining employment and three by being granted a Disabilty Support Pension.
Century Apartments project was an innovative joint venture between BHC and another community organisation, Queensland Cricketers’ Club (QCC). It also incorporated a proportion of government funding which has helped to ensure its ongoing social sustainability. The quality architectural design was delivered on time and on

The results are a strong ‘liveability’ factor, exceptional sales rates and a UDIA award for a Medium-Large Density Development in 2012.
BHC’s Cargo on Musgrave at Coopers Plains has been named the best Low-Rise Multi-Residential Housing (townhouses) development at the Brisbane 2013 Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards.
The $27 million project features a mix of 13 architect designed three-bedroom townhomes – which are now sold out – and 56 one, two and three bedroom apartments, with a good selection remaining available.
Greensquare has been BHC’s endeavour to optimise the form and amenity of its affordable housing program, developed over several years of research and project implementation in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.
All of the 78 apartments are arranged around a full height atrium which is daylit from above and naturally ventilates the building. The atrium is layered with vertical gardens and seating nooks such that it performs at each level as a core social space, protected from a relative hostile railway and connector street environs.
The architecture is created by alternating solid and translucent panels, the latter wrapping over the roof to envelope the atrium which forms the residents’ retreat and communal heart.
